WHAT IS THE GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®?

The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® is a movement modality that opens and heals all of the systems of the body. The circular, full-range, rhythmic motions both lengthen and strengthen the body while leaving the practitioner with an overall sense of well-being. This is not your typical sweaty, tooth-grinding workout. It is fun and satisfying and can be as gentle or challenging as the practitioner desires. It is appropriate for all ages and fitness levels. The system has two branches, GYROTONIC® practice and The GYROKINESIS® Practice.

The Gyrotonic branch uses a range of specialized pieces of equipment. Each unique piece provides various systems of pulleys, springs, both stable and moving parts, that give continuous resistance and feedback in order to support and facilitate movements as well as to present physical challenges. Using this equipment helps the practitioner to work more deeply and allows for movement and ranges of motion that might otherwise be too challenging or could risk injury. Gyrokinesis excercise is a non-equipment-based practice that uses the same principles of movement as the Gyrotonic work. It is where the entire system began, before the creation of the equipment. Seated, standing or on the floor, practitioners of this branch of the system use gravity and internal strength to create connection and vitality. Gyrokinesis method is most often taught in a class format.

The Gyrotonic expansion system was created by former professional dancer, Juliu Horvath. His experience in dance and in other movement studies such as yoga, gymnastics, swimming, all informed this functional and organic modality. After pain and injury ended his dance career, he retreated for several years of an intense healing practice. This resulted in a unique approach to keeping one’s body strong and mobile, without the negative impact of stress and strain. Not linear or static like many other strengthening modalities, both branches of this system use natural movement patterns that are done with continuous flow, and coordinated with the breath. With an emphasis on spinal health and mobility, this system also opens the joints and limbs, using back and forth action that eases the muscles open, working them safely through all possible ranges of motion, strengthening connective tissue and opening and lubricating the joints while simultaneously stimulating the nervous, lymphatic and digestive systems to work more effectively. The thoughtful motion leads to a greater self awareness and allows for increased physical and emotional freedom and ease.

ABOUT Gina Paolillo

Gina Paolillo has been practicing and teaching the GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® principles of movement for almost thirty years. While pursuing a career as a modern dancer in New York City in the early nineties, a ruptured ACL sustained in performance led to reconstructive surgery. The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® was suggested as an alternative for rehabilitating her knee. She was immediately drawn to the full, circular movements. Finding it immensely enjoyable and unique, she dove into the work and was able to return to her dance career stronger than ever. Leda Franklin, owner of Studio Riverside in New York, asked her to join the Riverside family of passionate, young teachers, and the journey began. During this time, she was fortunate to have experienced regular, intensive training directly under creator, Juliu Horvath. Realizing her love for teaching and sharing this special system with others, she became certified as both a Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis Master Trainer. She is also a GYROTONER® Master Trainer and a Specialized Master Trainer in all of the musical courses. Gina is one of three Master Trainers teaching the Gyrotonic Pre and Post-Natal Applications course. Along with a regular teaching schedule in her studio in Valhalla NY, and in New York City, she also teaches several teacher training courses a year in the United States and abroad.

In 2019, Gina and Master Trainers Christina Stroh of Santa Monica, California and Valeria Mauriz of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, came together to create a training program for Gyrotonic instructors to work with pre and post natal clients. The birthing community has benefited immensely from all of the awareness, breathing, opening, aligning, connecting and general calming that this program provides. Individually, the three have taught this course in North and South America, Europe, and Asia and they have gotten a lot of positive feed-backwherever they go. Teachers, students and clients have found the work to be a tremendous support through this very particular time in life. Gina has always dedicated this course and the support it provides to her dear friend, her first Gyrotonic mentor, her life sister, and the first to teach the Gyrotonic community a pre and postnatal application course, Leda Franklin. Movement has always been Gina’s great love. She began dancing at the age of three and continued her training through her BFA from Sarah Lawrence College and an MFA from NYU. Gina was fortunate to have had a dance career working with a variety of New York based companies and choreographers, all of whom she gleaned movement knowledge from. The Gyrotonic community melded into and was part of the dance world she was in. It allowed her to grow and enjoy dancing to the fullest. That joy and power that she found in moving is what excites her so much about teaching this system.
